Zen of Craftsmanship

by Pure Luxury

Chopard has launched four LUC watches under the theme "Inspirations from Japan – Artistic Crafts in Time," blending Swiss watchmaking with Japanese craftsmanship. From the courage of samurai and the tranquility of Zen to the poetry of Ukiyo-e and cherry blossoms at night, these watches showcase Chopard's understanding and respect for Eastern culture.

Samurai spirit

The LUC Full Strike "Spirit of the Warrior" timepiece combines a minute repeater complication with the spirit of traditional Japanese Bushido. The watch is powered by Chopard's signature minute repeater movement, meticulously hand-engraved. Its most striking feature is the sapphire crystal gong, which produces crystal-clear tones. The case is crafted from 18K white gold, with exquisite hand-engraved details showcasing the legendary stories and moral principles of the samurai world. Furthermore, Chopard has created a special box for the timepiece, featuring a spruce wood resonator to amplify the acoustic effects of the minute repeater, perfectly presenting its pure tone and rich timbre—a true masterpiece that embodies art, technology, and spirit.

Ukiyo-e image

The LUC XP Urushi Ukiyo-e watch combines top Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship with ancient Japanese lacquerware, and is limited to only eight pieces worldwide. The watch design pays homage to the masterpieces of Japanese ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai, with its unique dial depicting a view of Mount Fuji. The dial was meticulously handcrafted by lacquerware masters using the Maki-e technique, which has been passed down for over 1500 years. Maki-e uses precious Urushi (raw lacquer) as a base, then sprinkles gold powder onto the still-wet lacquer surface with bamboo tubes and mouse hair brushes to create extremely delicate lines and patterns. The watch is crafted with an 8K gold case and houses a slim movement with a 22K gold micro-rotor, offering a power reserve of up to 65 hours.

The beauty of night cherry blossoms

The LUC XP Sakura by Night watch draws inspiration from the fleeting beauty of nighttime cherry blossoms in Japanese culture (Yozakura). The dial combines various artistic techniques, including hand-engraved guilloché, translucent lacquer, mother-of-pearl engraving, and openwork gold carving, adorned with sparkling diamonds to create a captivating visual depth. The ultra-thin movement housed on the case back is also meticulously finished by the workshop's artisans. On the movement's white gold bridges, the craftsmen employ the traditional Fleurisanne engraving technique, using a complex process to present the cherry blossom pattern in relief, with a two-tone finish.

Philosophy of the Circle

The LUC Quattro Spirit "Ensō" watch is one of Chopard's limited-edition masterpieces paying homage to Japanese Zen culture, earning the Geneva Seal for its impeccable finishing. The watch features Chopard's signature Jumping Hour movement, with a dial design inspired by the Zen symbol "Ensō," representing infinity, enlightenment, and the universe. The center of the dial employs the Grand Feu enamel technique, offering a poetic new interpretation at the juncture of Eastern and Western artistic dimensions. Equipped with Chopard's exclusive four-barrel technology, the watch provides a robust eight-day power reserve.
