The Frame Becomes the Movement

by Pure Luxury

The soul of a top-of-the-line road bike lies in the weight and rigidity of every component and weld. And this time, that soul has been inscribed into a movement. This is the starting point for the collaboration between Richard Mille and the legendary Italian bicycle brand Colnago. Two brands, one in the watchmaking industry and the other in the bicycle industry, each upholding "lightweight," "precision," and "performance" as their sole standards, decided to express their respective craftsmanship in a single piece.

For years, Richard Mille has partnered with a lineup of cycling stars, including Mark Cavendish, Mathieu van der Poel, Tadej Pogačar, and the UAE Team Emirates. This time, the brand goes beyond sponsoring riders; it collaborates directly with frame manufacturers to launch the new RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago tourbillon watch, a limited edition of 50 pieces worldwide.

Drive logic written into the movement
If there's one aspect of this watch that deserves close scrutiny, it's the movement itself. The RM 64-01 comprises 274 parts, featuring a skeletonized mainplate and bridges made of grade 5 titanium alloy. The structure is lightweight, transparent, and three-dimensional. After micro-sandblasting, hand-beveling and polishing, and a black-grey PVD treatment, the layers of each component are clearly visible, making it resemble a miniature mechanical work of art.

The movement's gear train features a high-speed mainspring barrel, providing 65 hours of power reserve. The mainspring barrel is located at 1 o'clock, symmetrically arranged with the variable inertia tourbillon at 7 o'clock. This layout is almost identical to that of a bicycle drivetrain. The star-shaped design of the titanium upper bridge pays homage to Colnago's classic steel-framed "Master" from the 1980s; this structure maintains lightweight construction while significantly enhancing structural rigidity.

Ultra-lightweight like never before
The watch achieves a balance of strength and weight with the white quartz fiber composite material. The case continues Richard Mille's signature White Quartz TPT® white quartz fiber composite material, measuring 43.21 × 49.94 × 14.23 mm, maintaining an extremely light weight while ensuring strength and durability.

The first time I've seen such distinct layers of red and gold.
Visually, this is the first time that the Richard Mille sports watch series has incorporated the 5N red gold tone into its core design, directly inspired by the main color of the iconic Colnago frame "C68". The bridge is predominantly white with a white finish, and for the first time, the newly developed Azure Blue Quartz TPT® sky blue quartz fiber composite material is used in the engraved bezel, paired with the 5N red gold flange, creating distinct layers and adding a warm and refined texture to the overall design.

When architecture becomes the core, the RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago presents more than just a time display; it's a dialogue about innovation, performance, and craftsmanship. It seamlessly connects the seemingly disparate worlds of watches and bicycles, proving that true design excellence always stems from an unwavering pursuit of detail and a continuous push in the boundaries of craftsmanship.
