Between Palms and Waves

by Pure Luxury

There are places where you don't have to rush to see all the sights, nor do you need to check off landmarks and post photos to prove you've been. Their magic lies in making you willingly put your phone away, lie quietly between the sun and the waves, and listen to the sound of the wind. This summer, I visited Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, a resort nestled at the intersection of pristine coastline and tropical rainforest in the northeastern corner of the Dominican Republic. On this edge of the Caribbean, I rediscovered how to slow down, to connect with the world, and to connect with myself.

First Arrival in Holiday Paradise
Michès, in the northeastern corner of the Dominican Republic, was once an obscure village, but now it has become a hidden paradise thanks to Club Med. The drive from the airport to Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda takes nearly an hour and a half, passing low thatched huts and intermittent banana plantations. Arriving at dusk, Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda was nestled deep within coconut palm groves, raising expectations for the breathtaking scenery to come. Stepping into the lobby, looking out to sea, the setting sun had just disappeared below the horizon, and the entire sky resembled a canvas splashed with pomegranate juice.

At Club Med, there are a few terms that belong to this world. GO is short for "Gentle Organizer," and they are the soul of Club Med. GOs teach you archery by day, transform into bartenders by night, and occasionally dance on the beach. Guests are called GMs, which stands for "Gentle Member." My room was located in the Archipelago area, which is exclusively for couples and adults. All suites in this area face the ocean, each with its own small private pool and a private lawn, ensuring complete privacy. Stepping into the room, the first thing you see is the ocean view through floor-to-ceiling windows, with white sand and palm trees immediately coming into view. The bedroom and living room are separated by a natural-toned wooden partition. The bathroom features a double vanity, a large bathtub, and a walk-in shower in the center, and there is also a unique outdoor shower next to the bathroom.

El Limon Bar, the poolside bar at Zen Pool

Dinner was served at Cayuco restaurant, presented as a buffet. Grilled fresh fish, tropical vegetables sprinkled with sea salt, and a Mojito with local rum—from the taste buds to the visual appeal, even the Dominican drumbeats in the background gradually eased the tension of this city dweller. Alternatively, for a more upscale dining experience, Coco Plum offers reservations for dinner; their signature lobster and barbecue are among the resort's most popular dishes. The main Cayuco restaurant also features a dessert workshop with a wall of candy and a self-service chocolate station—a paradise for children. Bars are an essential element of the resort. Bar Cayuco, located in the center of the resort, is perfect for late-night chats, while El Limon Bar, near the Zen Pool, is popular for its juices and low-alcohol drinks, offering a tranquil atmosphere ideal for a relaxing afternoon. For a tropical beach experience, the beach bar next to Coco Plum restaurant is a must-visit; strolling on the fine sand, sipping coconut water, and gazing at the sea is pure bliss.

Day of exploring the resort
The next morning, with the sunlight still gentle, I brewed a cup of black tea in my room, drew back the curtains, and the sea was right before my eyes. After breakfast in the main restaurant, I joined a guided tour of the resort led by a GO (Guardian Officer). The resort's layout sprawled out naturally, with paths connecting different areas, lined with exotic tropical plants. We toured the various facilities within the resort, especially the children's amenities. From the cribs and bathtubs provided in the rooms to the baby meals and heating equipment in the main restaurant, Club Med offers age-appropriate activities and care services for children of different ages. Children aged two to three can join Petit Club Med, where professional GOs accompany them in creative activities, play, and meals. Children aged four and above can participate in sports and team games at Mini Club Med+, while teenagers have their own Teens Club or Chill Pass program, enjoying space for free exploration and socializing, ensuring that every family member can find their own rhythm and joy.

In the afternoon, we attended a yoga class at Yoga Palapa. It was a raised, thatched-roof pavilion nestled deep within a coconut grove, like a silent temple in a tropical rainforest. The railing, made of woven logs, was airy and allowed ample sunlight to filter through, revealing lush greenery and swaying palm leaves. The roof was covered with layers of palm leaves, allowing sunlight to filter through and dapple the wooden floor. The entire space was enveloped in a gentle breeze; coconut leaves rustled overhead, and the sounds of wind and birdsong occasionally mingled, as if the breath of heaven and earth slowed in unison with our own. This was the most Zen-like and comfortable yoga space I've ever seen. Practicing in such a space is not just about stretching the body, but more like a dialogue between humanity and nature. Besides adult yoga, the resort also offers yoga classes suitable for families, allowing parents to build a closer bond with their children during their trip. For those seeking a more unique experience, Club Med also offers aerial yoga classes, where participants can explore balance and flexibility by swinging in a suspended ribbon hammock, combining movements from traditional yoga, Pilates, and dance.

After taking a cold shower back in my room, I took my book and went to Zen Pool, where I found a lounge chair to relax in. The water in Zen Pool was a brilliant blue, and several guests were chatting and drinking in the middle of the pool, looking very relaxed. The El Limon Bar by the pool was the best spot, so I ordered a pineapple coconut milk cocktail and sat down to rest. The whole experience made me instantly forget about time.

An afternoon where sweat and essential oils alternate
The next day, Club Med arranged a spa experience for me. However, I had two hours free before heading to the spa, so I tried pickleball. When I first picked up a pickleball racket, it felt neither as heavy as a tennis ball nor as light as a badminton racket, but a perfect balance. The court was smaller than a standard tennis court, and the net was lower. This sport, which combines the rhythm of tennis, the agility of badminton, and the fun of table tennis, is fast-paced and flexible. After only a few tries, I was already captivated by its enjoyment. I naturally formed a doubles team with a few travelers I had just met. The shuttlecock flew back and forth, the racket clattered crisply, interspersed with laughter and shouts. We gradually became familiar with each other while running and swinging our rackets, without any pressure or competitive spirit. A few children sat under the coconut trees watching the game, drinking juice and imitating our movements, eager to try their hand at it themselves.

A vacation isn't just about lounging on the beach and by the pool; Club Med also helps you rediscover your long-lost vitality. Besides the addictive pickleball, archery and tennis are also excellent choices. GOs will demonstrate swing techniques while encouraging everyone to master the sport at their own pace and rhythm. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, everyone can find their own rhythm here, exercising without the pressure of a competition.

After my workout, I headed out to enjoy a spa treatment. As I stepped into Sothys Spa, the aroma was soft and unpretentious, a blend of white tea, woody notes, and botanical essential oils. I opted for a 50-minute relaxing massage and lay down on a massage bed covered in pristine white cotton sheets. The masseuse gently applied the essential oils, the warmth of her palms touching my skin—every movement felt meaningful. The treatment was inspired by traditional massage wisdom from around the world, blending Indian Ayurveda, Japanese Shiatsu, and Moroccan aromatherapy. The masseuse's hands moved with varying pressure and gliding motions, traversing my shoulders, back, and arms. I closed my eyes, cleared my mind, and my body gradually relaxed, my thoughts finding peace. At the end of the treatment, I didn't rush to get up but lay quietly, feeling the tranquility and balance deep within my body. As I left the spa, the sky softened, sunlight streamed onto the wooden floor, and my steps felt lighter.

Afterwards, I walked from the beach to the water sports area. The sea breeze was gentle, and the sunlight shone on the surface of Playa Esmeralda, like a gently undulating sheet of glass. I chose a single kayak, and with the help of a GO (Guardian) pushing it into the water, I paddled out of the shallows myself. Ahead lay the entire bay stretching eastward. The moment I settled in, my body wasn't quite used to the slight swaying of the water, but as soon as the paddle moved, the boat glided smoothly with the current, giving me a feeling of being caught by nature. Looking out from the water, the coconut palms on the shore resembled a soft wall, shimmering with silver edges in the sunlight. I circled the shallows and slowly paddled further out. The water became deeper, and its color changed from transparent to turquoise. The waves weren't large, but they were rhythmic. Paddling for a while made me sweat, and when I stopped, I could only hear the breathing of the sea. Meanwhile, the GO steered a speedboat alongside to assist us, ensuring everyone's safety.

Although I didn't personally participate in all the water activities, I saw guests interacting with the ocean in different ways every day on Playa Esmeralda's beach. Morning is the best time for Stand-Up Paddleboarding; the sunlight is still soft, and gliding on the board feels like gliding across a still mirror of water. Families also team up for Giant Paddleboarding, with multiple people on one board, creating a series of joyful competitions of balance and coordination. In the afternoon, the sea breeze picks up, and colorful kites from Kitesurf soar above Samana Bay. Some people even try out electric surfboards and Hobie pedalboards, gliding across the water as if riding the wind – a truly futuristic experience. These activities don't require complicated reservations; just walk to the beach, and GOs will assist you in experiencing all the water sports.

The resort offers a variety of water activities, and GOs will provide guidance.

If you don't want to go out to sea, the pool areas at Club Med are enough to keep you entertained for a whole day. The main pool in the center of the resort is the most lively area, while families staying at La Perla have their own Family Pool, a quieter space perfect for playing with children. For younger children, the Mini Splash area at Mini Club Med is a paradise, with a shallow pool, fountains, and simple facilities. GOs are on hand to accompany the children, ensuring they have a great time without any planning. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, the Zen Pool is the ideal choice. Nestled among coconut palms, the Zen Pool is an adults-only pool, perfect for sitting quietly, reading, or simply relaxing on the surface.

Days of coexisting with nature
At Club Med Michès, environmental protection is an everyday part of life. The entire resort is designed with the concept of coexisting with nature, with four themed villages blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Coconut groves, mangroves, and coastlines have been preserved almost pristinely. Water jugs are not disposable plastic, but reusable glass bottles, and the coffee and chocolates on the tables mostly come from local small-scale farmers' cooperatives. From farm to table, every bite is authentic and tells a story. The resort also collaborates with local conservation organizations, actively participating in the protection of endangered falcons and sea turtles, helping hundreds of baby sea turtles return to the ocean each year. Travel and environmental protection are not contradictory at Club Med Michès, allowing guests not only to escape the pressures of life but also to rethink their relationship with nature.

On the morning of my departure, I woke up earlier than usual and walked to the beach alone. The sun was just rising, and the sky was a hazy blend of gray-blue and orange-pink. The sea breeze was gentle, and the waves still lapped slowly. I sat on the sand, quietly watching the sea that had been my companion for several days. Besides feeling reluctant to leave, I was also deeply grateful to Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda for allowing me to find renewed life amidst the waves and the shadows of the trees when I needed it most.
