Imagine walking into the Caribbean Sea at night and with every movement the water becomes a canvas of twinkling blue stars. When you put your hand into the water and shake it gently, the surface of the water lights up with dazzling fluorescence. As you ride in a transparent kayak through this wonderland, the glass bottom looks like a starry sky map. This enchanting experience is what Vieques Island, Puerto Rico is all about.
The tour begins in San Juan, Puerto Rico's vibrant capital, known for its rich culture, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality. While most tourists enjoy the beaches, music and food, we were looking for the unspoiled and pristine scenery, the purity and luxury that is Isla de Vieques. Here, time seems to stand still, and nature is in control of everything.
This time we chose to fly by charter plane instead of ferry. It only takes 15 minutes from takeoff to landing on a small plane, and you can overlook the magnificent scenery of Puerto Rico along the way. As we approached Isla Vieques, the pristine beauty of the island immediately appeared before our eyes, making us extremely excited and eager to immerse ourselves in this paradise. Vieques is a small island where everything is within 15 minutes. After checking into the uniquely designed El Blok Hotel, we discovered that the beach was only a short walk away. However, our hearts have long been drawn to the famous Sun Bay Beach featured in the Corona beer commercials. It is a pleasure to stroll or relax in the shade of countless palm trees and admire this vast and almost unspoiled beach. Not only is there a sparse population here, you're also more likely to see horses grazing leisurely on the beach.
We then took a minibus to the legendary Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay. With our expert guide, we prepared our glass-bottom kayaks and flashlights for this evening adventure in the bay. The bright light of the guide's flashlight contrasted sharply with the surrounding night, which felt very magical. When paddling the kayak, spectacular blue light will be stirred up under the water, as if you are in the scene of the movie "Avatar", which is the climax of the whole journey. As we paddle towards the protected mangroves, we suddenly witness fish streaking across the water like shooting stars, leaving behind fluorescent trails that add to the fascinating sight. Words and pictures cannot express this amazing experience, it is a natural wonder that must be experienced in person and not just viewed online.
Isla de Vieques offers a journey into the wonders of life that, while it takes some effort to get to, is definitely worth it. Here you can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. If you are looking for a true paradise, Vieques Island is definitely the best choice.
